Walking through the scrub with my nanna, the sun shining down, the rustling of leaves beneath our feet, and the sweet scent of quandong trees wafting through the air.
We used to weave our way through the dense foliage, until we came across a tree with branches heavy with bright, crimson-colored fruit. Nanna would tell me that these are quandongs, a special fruit that has been used by our people for centuries. She taught me how to carefully pluck the fruit, taking only what we needed and leaving the rest for the animals that call this place home.
We used to fill our basket with the tart and juicy berries while nanna told me stories of her youth, of a time when the bush was her playground and the quandongs were her favorite treat. Her words transported me back in time and I felt a deep connection to the land and its history.
With the sun setting and our bounty in hand, we would make it back home and nanne would show me how to make so many different foods from the native berries.
Quandong ice cream was my favourite.
