Painted live for BHP, this artwork tells the story of the enduring bond between land, community, and culture. Created amidst the ochre sands of BHP’s Oak Dam mine site, nestled within the ancestral lands of the Kokatha, Arabana, and Dieri peoples, this piece resonates with the vibrant colours of the desert and evokes the same feeling of peace, calm and “home” you get by gazing out on the vast open plains of my traditional lands.
Swathes of reds, oranges, and yellows sweep across the surface, echoing the sun-kissed palette of the outback, while delicate green dots punctuate the landscape, symbolising the resilient arid vegetation that thrives in this breathtaking environment.
Symbols of community and connection weave together the stories of BHP managers, workers, and traditional owners while each journey depicts a deep respect for Aboriginal wisdom and a shared commitment to the land, echoing the ancient principles of custodianship passed down through generations.
“On Country” reminds us of the power of working together to forge a sustainable future.
